You may be planning your wedding in a romantic destination, but might not be aware that there are some residency requirements that could affect your special time adversely.
For instance, if you are planning a wedding in Jamaica, you will need to be there for two days before the ceremony can begin. If you want to get married on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, you will need to be in Jamaica by the end of Thursday or you cannot get married on any of those days.
Residency requirements for some popular destinations included;
Jamaica – 48 hours
St. Lucia – 72 hours
Antigua – 48 hours
Bahamas – 48 hours
Mexico – None
There will be other documents required by the host country which your travel agent and wedding specialist with the resort will provide for you.
Planning can be a nightmare. Here are some tips on how to go about it and what to watch out for.
1. Choose a travel agent who has experience with destination weddings. This is too important to trust to a well intentioned amateur OR yourself. It won’t cost you any extra to do this and the benefit you receive from the expert will be invaluable.
2. Make your reservation. Popular destinations fill up quickly with travelers and the popularity of destination weddings is growing exponentially. A resort will usually limit the number of weddings they will allow per day and the early bookings will ensure you get the resort you desire.
3. GET THE WORD OUT. The earlier you let people know, the more likely people are going to attend. They can plan and save so that they can share in your fun. Remind them that they can ‘layaway’ their trip and pay a bit each month to minimize the impact on their budget.
4. Prepare your documentation. This can be confusing and complicated, but your travel agent and the wedding specialist at the resort will make this much easier on you and your guests than if you were trying to do it on your own. You have enough to worry about without having to deal with the logistics.
