Looking for adventure? Don’t have the money to safari in Africa or trek to Machu Pichu? How about staying right here in the United States and enjoying whitewater rafting, zip-lines, 4-wheeling over mountain passes and hiking through the wilderness?
You can do all that and more in the Durango, Colorado area.
The Animas River offers great fun for everyone. There are several levels of trip available. For those not interested in testing their metal on Class 4 and 5 rapids there is the more gentle river rapid run that set out just north of town. They wind their way through the city, with one testy rapid near the city park and are perfect for the family with younger children.
If you are interested in more difficult whitewater go late spring and early summer and take the train or bus north toward Silverton and get your fill. I suggest this time of year, because the river will be higher due to the snow melt and will give you plenty to talk about when you get home.
Mountain roads with sheer drops and big vistas more your style? The perfect roads for this lie between Silverton, Ouray and Lake City. Engineer Pass, California Pass, Stoney Pass and several others will allow you to get your fill of shake-rattle-and-roll as you traverse the beautiful mountains. There are plenty of places to stop and take in the beauty of your surroundings and catch your breath after chugging over the narrow winding roads.
If you really have a craving for the ‘jeep roads’ you can also go to Telluride over Ophir or Imogene Passes and if you are borderline insane you can test your driving skills and nerve on Black Bear Pass which is a one way route from Ouray to Telluride.
Want something a little slower paced? The Colorado Trail ends in Durango and you can make the 30 mile hike from between Silverton and Lake City and enjoy the San Juan National Forest. There are also hundreds of miles of other trails to choose from and ‘lose yourself’ in the journey.
Of course, you may want to take fishing tackle with you and test your skills in the crystal clear streams and catch dinner on your trek. If so, be sure to acquire your fishing license before you set off.
Like to zip? Soaring Tree Top Adventures should be one of your destinations then. They have over a mile of zip line and 22 separate lines. It is a day trip, though, and not an hour of fun. You will ride on their own private railroad car. This is the same train, but not the same car, you would take for the Upper Animas whitewater trip. Their youngest ‘adventurer’ was 3 and their oldest 91 so it is fun for all.
There is much more to do there including luge rides (yes, in the summer), horseback riding, train rides and much more. We know the entire area very well, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton, Lake City and Durango and would love to help you plan a trip to the area and make the most of your vacation.
